A Peruvian Sojourn

  • Catholic University 620 Michigan Ave. N.E. Washington, DC 20064 United States (map)

This program features compositions by classically trained Peruvian composers and a Peruvian-American composer who were inspired in a variety of ways by Andean Indigenous melodies, rhythms, and traditions. These works range from simple folk settings to complex compositions, and they illustrate the colorful, haunting, and energetic combination of the Andean Indigenous musical traditions with Western classical music, both tonal and new.

Carmen Rodríguez-Peralta and Orlando Cela have performed together for many years, and being of Latin American heritage, this program has special significance for them. Carmen Rodríguez-Peralta holds a Master of Music from The Catholic University of America and a Post-Graduate Diploma from The Juilliard School. She spent a sabbatical semester studying with Emma Garmendia at the CUA Latin American Music Center. Orlando Cela holds two Master of Music degrees, in flute and conducting, from New England Conservatory. They are both active as soloists and chamber musicians.Their new album, A Peruvian Sojourn, was recently released by Albany Records, and it is available on Amazon, as well as on many streaming services.
