Milhaud - La Creation du Monde, Op. 81a
In the year 1922, Milhaud heard jazz in Harlem, and this changed his compositional style forever. Very sensitive to many influences, he loved Schönberg’s music and he had just returned from a few years in Brazil; and he managed to incorporate all these styles in his compositional output. La Creation du Monde is truly magnificent example of Milhaud’s fusion style: based on the blues scale, the piece features a prototypical fugue, politonality, and unusual orchestration, inspired by the bands he heard in Harlem.
